Voices Inside and Out

David barker part 2

Episode Transcription

In this episode, David Barker, shares with us challenges he faced being homeless after leaving prison.  Finding employment, shelter and even food were a struggle while living on the streets.  The John Howard Society helped him to find more secure housing and he was then able to help others.  He tells us a bit more about his work with the John Howard Society of Ottawa in a Justice Involved Housing program.  Based on Housing First principles, this City of Ottawa Initiative focuses on those being released from prison who have a history of homelessness with a view to preventing recidivism.   David says he wishes there had been a program like that when he was being released.
